Genetic Carrier Screening and Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT)

While planning to start a family, some patients may wonder if there are any genetic traits they may carry that can cause inherited conditions in their future children.  In the recent years, genetic carrier status tests have become widely available and affordable, and may help couples determine their reproductive risk for certain conditions, including Cystic Fibrosis, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Sickle Cell Anemia, and many others.  At the Fertility Institute of Hawaii, we offer a genetic carrier screening panel to our patients that checks for over 250 recessive and X-linked conditions that you could unknowingly pass on to a baby.  If both partners are found to be carriers of the same abnormal trait, there is a risk of having a child with the condition.  Preimplantation genetic testing is a treatment option available to couples testing positive for the same abnormal gene where embryos are created and tested for the condition prior to being transferred into the uterus.

If you or your partner have family history of certain genetic conditions or you are simply interested in getting screened, please contact Fertility Institute of Hawaii at 808-545-2800 or or visit our website at https://www.ivfcenterhawaii.com/ to schedule your appointment.
