Protein Supplements and Male Fertility
Protein supplementation is common among health conscious and physically active people. However, there is evidence that some dietary supplements marketed to enhance physical performance and muscle growth/repair may be related to decreased semen quality and male infertility. Studies suggest that the majority of protein supplements commercially available worldwide through gyms, fitness centers, and online “contain not exclusively pro-androgenic and androgenic anabolic steroids contaminants, either declared or hidden on the label”. The list of contaminants found in some of the products included pro-androgenic compounds, xenoestrogens, estrogens, selective androgen-receptor modulators, and non-steroidal antiestrogens to name but a few. Some other surprising ingredients in some of the products included anti-hypertensives, diuretics, vasodilators, adrenaline derivatives, bronchodilators, anti-asthma medications, amphetamines, and painkillers. Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, no dietary supplements, including protein powders, are regulated by the FDA or examined for safety or efficacy. Some patent laws may even protect certain formulations from having to disclose all of the ingredients in the product. The bottom line is that patients pursuing fertility treatments, especially those with decreased semen quality, should be cautious about selecting a protein supplement or discontinue their use while undergoing fertility treatments.
