Pre-implantation Genetic Testing (PGT) – This is a special procedure in which embryos are evaluated for genetic abnormalities prior to being transferred into the uterus during IVF. This procedure is not offered at all fertility clinics because it is technically very difficult requiring experienced personnel. The personnel at the Fertility Institute of Hawaii are some of the best trained in the world for technical IVF procedures such as embryo biopsy for PGT.
PGT is being widely used these days to prevent the transfer of abnormal embryos that would normally not create a pregnancy, end in a miscarriage, or allow a possible birth of an infant with a chromosomal disorder, such as Down’s syndrome. PGT can beq useful for couples that have a known risk of passing on an inherited disease to a child. It is also an option for couples that have had multiple miscarriages, or for couples that are unable to achieve a pregnancy after several attempts at IVF or are at risk for producing a large number of abnormal embryos.
Family Balancing or Gender Selection – Gender selection is a popular option for couples desiring to choose the sex of their baby or reduce the risk of transmitting gender-linked genetic diseases. PGT is commonly used to balance the genders within a family. Many parents feel a strong desire to complete their families with the addition of a son or daughter.
