Ask the Docs January 2025 – All About Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT)

On January 10th, our physicians hosted the first Ask the Docs livestream of the year, diving into the fascinating world of Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT). Drs. Frattarellli, Karmon, and Goulet explained how PGT can provide valuable insights into embryo health during in vitro fertilization (IVF), helping hopeful parents make informed decisions about their fertility journey.

The doctors began by breaking down the basics of PGT, explaining how this specialized testing detects chromosomal abnormalities or inherited genetic conditions in embryos before transfer. They also highlighted the differences between PGT and other genetic tests, like carrier screening or non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT). The conversation then shifted on explaining the different types of PGT, including PGT-A for aneuploidy, PGT-M for monogenic diseases, and PGT-SR for structural rearrangements. The live chat also provided some questions for our physicians like whether PGT can be performed on embryos created in prior IVF cycles that were frozen.

The livestream concluded with a look at the benefits of PGT. While it cannot guarantee a baby born free of birth defects, PGT significantly reduces the risk of passing on inherited genetic conditions. It also provides an opportunity for gender selection, allowing patients to balance their family or select a preferred gender. Dr. Karmon wrapped up by encouraging viewers to reach out for more information and to determine if PGT is the right choice for their fertility journey.
